Nature Medicine publication

The Division of Biological Engineering's PhD student Elham Tolouie, Dr Josie Carberry and Dr Andreas Fouras, have collaboratively published a Nature Medicine paper on thrombus formation with Dr Warwick Nesbitt, Erik Westein and Prof Shaun Jackson from the ACBD at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital, and colleagues from RMIT University.

The paper entitled, "A shear gradient–dependent platelet aggregation mechanism drives thrombus formation", details how platelet aggregation at sites of vascular injury is essential for hemostasis and arterial thrombosis, driven from the past assumption that platelet aggregation and thrombus growth are initiated by soluble agonists generated at sites of vascular injury. The researchers used high-resolution intravital imaging techniques and hydrodynamic analyses to show that platelet aggregation is primarily driven by changes in blood flow parameters.
