Deadline for MRGS scholarship applications: Applications for 2010 postgraduate projects are now open until midnight 31st October 2009. If you are interested in a biological engineering postgraduate project, please contact Dr Andreas Fouras via email to discuss the possibility of a future scholarhship placement.

To apply: Please read and follow the postgraduate information listed below.

Postgraduate information

The Division of Biological Engineering offers suitably qualified engineering graduates (namely Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical and Chemical), but also science honours graduates from an appropriate major, the opportunity to undertake a higher degree by research within the MuBeta Lab.

Postgraduate students may either undertake a Master of Engineering Science (Research) degree over two years full-time, or a Doctor of Philosophy degree over three years full-time.

For more information about the pros, cons and reasons to do a postgraduate degree by research, please visit the Faculty of Engineering's Research - PhD or Masters page, and also the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering's Postgraduate future students page.

Postgraduate scholarships

Postgraduate degrees are generally accompanied by a scholarship, which is essentially a stipend to help with living expenses, so that students are able to do full-time research through the duration of their postgraduate degree. There are a number of scholarships available to students wishing to study a postgraduate degree. The main scholarships are;

  • Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)
  • Monash Graduate Scholarship (MGS)
  • Departmental Scholarship
Eligibility is restricted to students with a H1 Equivalency; factoring academic record, research output and prior research experience. Aus/NZ engineering graduates with first class honours are immediately eligible for application.

For detailed information about the research scholarships available, eligibility and application details, please see the MRGS Research Scholarships page.

Tuition fees

Australian and New Zealand students undertaking full time postgraduate degrees by research are not liable for tuition fees (HECS/HELP-exempt). No debt is generated against future income, unlike current undergraduate degrees.

International students are liable for tuition fees, however students applying for an International MGS, will also apply for an International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) which covers the cost of tuition fees.

How to apply

The application process for all postgraduate research scholarships is conducted through a single MRGS (Monash Research Graduate School) online form which allows you to apply for one or all available scholarships. The steps in applying for a scholarship in the MuBeta Lab are as follows:

  1. Check eligibility
Only applicants with a H1 equivalency (first class honours) will be considered.
International students must meet minimum English language proficiency requirements.
  2. Select a topic
Please see our 2009 postgraduate project topics listed at the top of this page.
  3. Contact academic unit
Please contact project supervisor Andreas Fouras via email ASAP to express your interest, discuss your topic choice as well as other questions you may have.
  4. Complete online application form (both local and international applicants)
The MRGS online research scholarship application form is open from August until midnight (AEST) 31st October each year, and is used for all available scholarships. You must first register a username and password to use the online application form. Once you begin your online application, all field entries are saved so that you may return to your application at a later date – if need be. The Step-by-step guide is a useful resource when completing your application.

Note the following answers to your application:

    • Course: PhDEng or MEng(Res)
    • Faculty: Engineering
    • Department: Mechanical & Aerospace, Division of Biological Engineering
    • Campus: Clayton
    • Study-mode: On-campus

More details about the application process are available on the MRGS Applying for a postgraduate research scholarship page.

Visa requirements

Upon receiving a scholarship and place at Monash, successful international applicants must also apply for a relevant visa to study in Australia. Please refer to the Monash Visa requirements page. Students studying a postgraduate degree in the MuBeta Lab will require a 574 Postgraduate Research student visa.

MCSS PhD Scholarships

The Monash Centre for Synchrotron Science (MCSS) offers postgraduate scholarship topics relevant to MuBeta Lab's research interests in synchrotron science. In 2009 the following projects were offered in conjunction with the MuBeta Lab:

If you are interested in the projects listed above, please contact Dr Andreas Fouras to discuss the possibility of obtaining an MCSS/MuBeta Lab scholarship to complete a similar project in synchrotron science.

More information: This is an independent scholarship to those applied through the MRGS online application form. To apply, follow the application procedure listed on the MCSS Future postgraduate students page. Further information including eligibility and scholarship payments can also be found on this page, along with contact details for the MCSS scholarship co-ordinator, Dr Karen Siu.
